What did the service provider do well?
Great development partner, excellent communication, and great product quality! Bixlabs is always very receptive and reactive to our requests and very proactive in asking for feedback on how they're doing. It's great working with them because you work with the people at their company and not with heavy contracts. We're in collaboration with their team members sometimes on a daily basis, but we meet on the phone with them weekly, and you get to talk to somebody and work through what you're trying to deliver, what they're trying to deliver, answer, and ask questions. It's a very personal relationship with their staff.
Where could the service provider improve?
They could always improve their output. We always joke about that. They are always focused on quality but quality is something that you never reach a destination on. It's always something that's a journey.
How did they handle problems and issues that came up during development?
Bixlabs picked up a lot of the Agile software development practices and ran with it themselves. That has helped increase their output. It allowed us to work much better together. We provide them the features and the stories that we're looking for and they work on the stories in iterations and deliver them once a week. We assess the work and continue going.

I'm an Agile coach for a consulting firm. We help large enterprise corporations' IT [information technology] and business partners to develop and build software using the Agile methodology. We help Fortune 500 companies deliver software. We approached Bixlabs to develop apps that we use internally. What we call the GPS app is an app that we use to assess teams that we work with and give them a road map of where they are today and how they progress. The app walks them through the journey and gives them an idea on how they're doing against the behaviors and practices that we're working with them to develop. This is an app that we use alongside of our clients to track our progress on their projects.

For me, after having an experience with a bad development partner, the most unique thing is that Bixlabs delivers on expectations. From my experience, it started to seem like in the outsourcing development industry, getting what you want is actually difficult. What makes Bixlabs special is that they actually listen to the client's needs and work to provide that. They'll take a lot of time to listen, to try to understand. The biggest challenge that we had before Bixlabs was just an overall bad development team. It was a very bad experience with our previous developer. We didn't get what we wanted, and it cost way too much. We brought Bixlabs in to fix what our previous developers left us with and they really helped us out. My organization was absolutely elated to have found Bix. Working closely on a daily basis, we formed one cohesive team. They were outstanding communicators (we used several online collaboration tools including Jira, Slack, Flowdock, dropbox and more. The ability to reach them at nearly any hour of the day was an immense benefit. The best service providers are the ones that can listen well and then bring a high degree of attention to the relationship. Bixlabs has done a great job with that. Every culture is different. Bixlabs has done a nice job of listening, putting a lot of energy into it, and they also take real pride in their work.

The risk for them is as development shops grow and get attention they tend not to do as well with client service. They don't do as well with the things that got them the success to begin with. I think that is not just confined to BIX Labs, but every service provider that's overseas. They start servicing the U.S., and they double in size, but then the quality drops off or the attention drops off. They'll have to confront that as they grow.

From a development perspective, they brought extreme strength to the team. Their angular.js and node experience are second to none. Further, they were able to automate much of our integration and continuous deployment, saving us time and money. This is an outstanding group: the best at any price. Communication, development, and team work are what sets TopTier apart. There are a lot of good devs and dev shops out there. But there are not many that we would treat like they were in-house, and TopTier earned that.

As long as you worked an agile communication system with TopTier, their work is as good as anyone's and better than most. Working in an iterative SDLC allows them to adjust their thinking and their development to meet all of the issues that we encountered.

Spencer and Campus Bubble are so adept at listening and responding in a polite, professional manner. They as well as anybody know that the world of web/mobile apps are fraught with people asking for the moon (e.g. "can your app do this?"; "it'd be amazing if it could do that"), but Spencer takes this in stride and can immediately manage expectations in a way I don't usually see -- wish lists are never truly off the table, but he intimately knows the limitations of his team's time and resources, and yet still has been able to deliver functionality that pleases everyone. I know that sounds vague, but I've found it so invaluable when I need to manage OTHERS' expectations in our organization. Spencer also is great at providing timely updates and reaching out to constituents independent of myself. I fully trust him to talk to anybody at Emory Campus Life because I know he'll handle the conversation with care. He does presentations very well, knows when to talk and when to listen during them, and always has a mind for the higher purpose of the project -- that is, he doesn't get bogged down in the day-to-day, and knows how to make decisions from a 10,000 ft level. Finally, Spencer and his team have been very patient. While eager, their energy never comes across as a negative. Despite a launch on our campus that didn't quite take hold as well as we wanted to, the Bubble was more energized than ever to meet REPEATEDLY with students, staff, entire departments...all to better the product. Higher education can be a frustrating place to work in terms of slow-moving projects and limited funds, but Spencer has handled it all with grace and an infectious desire to keep working.
Where could the service provider improve?
I honestly don't see any glaring areas for improvement -- I'm always a fan of *more* transparency, so I suppose more visuals would be nice in between the 2-week "sprints" that preclude the Bubble team's email updates. That said, the updates are well-written, and I'm sure they'd be happy to share progress further in case anyone followed up with those emails directly. Occasionally I have to manage expectations and that eagerness I mentioned earlier, which I think is a reflection of the Bubble team's overwhelmingly young ages, but it's hard to complain about a provider that is *too* eager to improve the product. Getting buy-in from an admittedly large organization doesn't happen overnight.
How did they handle problems and issues that came up during development?
With a refreshing dose of humility. They'll be the first to tell you that the Bubble didn't latch on at Emory the first go-around, due mainly to technical capacity limitations. But the process to re-invent the product after that was great -- they directed all aspects, including organizing focus groups, ALWAYS heavily insisting for feedback, and rebranding in a way that never seemed internally demoralizing (to them). If there's ever been a case study for how to handle failure and come back better for it, they would be it. It sounds like hyperbole, but they have really impressed me with the way the product has grown since that failed lunch.

Our project was a full-service communications web/mobile app on a college campus. The university had abandoned its previous all-in-one platform a few years back, and recognized that a distinct hole was left behind -- administrators communicating with students had suddenly become much, much harder. The idea behind Emory Bubble was to recreate that magic in a hub that had "bubbles" for any number of organizations or concepts (e.g. individual courses, student-run organizations, feedback for renovations to a building, etc), and allowed for file-sharing, event postings, conversation, comments, likes, and structure for that organization or group. The amalgamation of all of this discourse is a public feed that is exclusive to the Emory community -- like Facebook, but better suited to our campuses' individual needs.
JPP needed a fresh new look for their logo and a modern, video-centric online portfolio and blog. Nightly Labs provided the logo design, web design, and web development services.

Product/abstract thinking was exemplary. Nightlylabs thought in terms of what the design was going to "say" to users, how it was going to communicate and interact, etc. And Nightlylabs effectively implemented those product ideas: the site is as clean and communicable as it was conceived to be.

Nothing comes to mind, the experience was that pleasant.

I am very pleased with the engineering services provided by Coditation. I would like to see them improve a bit in Technical Documentation area - they do a good job in writing architectural documents, approach notes and code comments etc. but other documentation such as User Guide, Setup Instructions could be helpful to customers.

They were very thorough in the requirement gathering, analysis and architectural design phase so there were very few surprises or roadblocks as such.
