Grindr's users expect to have seamless offline delivery of messages, a complete history of their conversations available at any time and perfect synchronisation of chats between devices. Behind the scenes, the chat server engine has to scale up to ever-increasing user load and messaging traffic without a hiccup. These requirements meant that Grindr‘s legacy ejabberd system needed to be replaced, and the MongooseIM platform was chosen for the job. With the help of Erlang Solutions’s team of XMPP experts, in January 2015 Grindr’s new chat solution was deployed. (less)

bet365’s in-play betting platform was initially developed in Java. It was a highly concurrent, distributed system running 100’s of servers, allowing users to place bets in real time. It (more)supported TCP/IP and Long Poll clients and made use of proprietary modelling techniques for changing the odds on bets. Customer numbers have consistently increased since the company launched. At any one time, up to two million people could be connected to its site simultaneously, generating thousands of updates per second. The sheer volume of web traffic and transactions placed huge pressures on the systems that supported it. The company realised that it was only a matter of time before the system would hit the limit of its capability. Scalability would slow down, latency would increase with load and reliability would be a problem. Its business was running at a scale where traditional tools and techniques no longer offered acceptable performance in terms of scalability and time to market. Bet365’s team found and evaluated the Erlang programming language. The simplicity and compactness of the language made it a good fit. Its actor style concurrency, immutability, OTP libraries and reliability semantics all made it far easier to construct massively parallel systems. Erlang Solutions was quick to understand bet365's business challenges and also had extensive expertise in providing consultancy and development services in Erlang technology. A successful 2 month proof of concept (“POC”) followed. Bet365 and Erlang Solutions formed a core engineering team, comprising a technical architect and lead along with a team of software engineers. Erlang Solutions with its dedicated team and deep expertise offered expert advice on building, scaling and customizing bet365’s in-play platform, as well as training and service support. Bet365 had a very successful POC where they found Erlang to be a much better fit than the Java-based solution that they had previously used. The outcome? All communication was managed between a team of 24 local experts (13 from Inaka and ESL) across 3 different timezones using a coherent communication system and well managed tools to harmonize flow of tasks and achieve project milestones on time and on budget.
