We had some internal delays but Sunflower was able to pick up where the project halted and deliver according to our project scope and budget in a timely fashion. We have been pleased with the end result, and so far our recently released (August 2011) app has received a great deal of positive feedback from both photographers and end users. Being patient, because I'm not a patient person. They were patient with me and would tell me what I need. Again, this is not my background at all. I know that all the pieces work, just not how they work, and they're patient with me. Customer service was great more than anything. I love the work that went into it, how much they cared about it and wanted to make it right. If they thought it should go one way and I thought it should go another way, we'd have live discussions about what I wanted, and this is why they think, in the technical world, it should be this way. We'd go back and forth. Sometimes I'd say yes, but sometimes I said, “No, we're going with what I said.” We'd end it there, but we'd always have a discussion about it, so I appreciate that
would say that some of the work is outsourced to India, and I probably would've liked to have known. From midnight to 8 o'clock, sometimes I was going back and forth with someone from India working on it. I didn't mind that; when things come my way, I'd rather get it knocked out. By knowing up front that there's that option, then maybe I could've scheduled my next seven months off of having a different type of sleep schedule.
hey performed very well. I haven't had any communication issues. We use Trello for the most part. That's worked out really well. Then we also have a Slack channel, but we don't use that too much. I'm partial to Trello by this time with them. Sunflower Labs has two partners, from my understanding; Ronak Patel and Yash Patel. Ronak's in Hilliard, Ohio, which is a suburb of Columbus. Yash lives in New Jersey, so I talked mostly with Yash, who would do the design and overview. Ronak's more on the financial side; he's a developer as well. Then I'd deal with a project manager, who's over in India. It was a mix of Yash in New Jersey and the project manager in India. I felt like I had a lot of control over things, too, saying, “Hey, this is what I want. Let's see where you have it in a month from now.” Sometimes, we'd talk twice a week; sometimes we'd only talk once every other week; sometimes we'd talk every day for three weeks.
To be honest with you, I have zero backgrounds in that world. It was really refreshing to me that they were able to take pictures that I drew. I made some wireframes myself using Dynamic Panels and some other software, but for the most part, they were able to take what was in my head and conceived to paper and turn it into a working product. It exceeded my expectations. We needed development, obviously, and a feeling of confidentiality, which is my biggest concern of anything, which they were able to do. They built and are continuing to work on our apps on iOS and Android.

would say that some of the work is outsourced to India, and I probably would've liked to have known. From midnight to 8 o'clock, sometimes I was going back and forth with someone from India working on it. I didn't mind that; when things come my way, I'd rather get it knocked out. By knowing up front that there's that option, then maybe I could've scheduled my next seven months off of having a different type of sleep schedule.
How did they handle problems and issues that came up during development?
hey performed very well. I haven't had any communication issues. We use Trello for the most part. That's worked out really well. Then we also have a Slack channel, but we don't use that too much. I'm partial to Trello by this time with them. Sunflower Labs has two partners, from my understanding; Ronak Patel and Yash Patel. Ronak's in Hilliard, Ohio, which is a suburb of Columbus. Yash lives in New Jersey, so I talked mostly with Yash, who would do the design and overview. Ronak's more on the financial side; he's a developer as well. Then I'd deal with a project manager, who's over in India. It was a mix of Yash in New Jersey and the project manager in India. I felt like I had a lot of control over things, too, saying, “Hey, this is what I want. Let's see where you have it in a month from now.” Sometimes, we'd talk twice a week; sometimes we'd only talk once every other week; sometimes we'd talk every day for three weeks.
What did the service provider build or do for you? What was your project?
To be honest with you, I have zero backgrounds in that world. It was really refreshing to me that they were able to take pictures that I drew. I made some wireframes myself using Dynamic Panels and some other software, but for the most part, they were able to take what was in my head and conceived to paper and turn it into a working product. It exceeded my expectations. We needed development, obviously, and a feeling of confidentiality, which is my biggest concern of anything, which they were able to do. They built and are continuing to work on our apps on iOS and Android.

However, I have noticed that content in the online product could benefit from more careful transfer of content ( sometime there are typos/spelling errors). Overall, the quality of the work and product is high and this has been a minor hassle in a few instances.

Northsouth Studios worked on the implementation of the Rights Management Web application, which is currently used by the company and it's researchers to match songs to the musical works catalog and publisher catalog, and to manage those catalogs as well. North South is an excellent digital media development firm. Technically the firm has as complete a range of design and development skills as any top tier firm in the US. They are especially impressive in their reliability, timeliness and communication. Communication is particularly remarkable given their primary physical office location in Lima. This was an initial concern for my company but quickly was forgotten.
There are no major issues or areas for improvement. NorthSouth did not have prior experience working in digital music and thus was not knowledgable about digital music industry, technologies and databases matters. We were aware of this limitation and it did not affect the success of the project.
NorthSouth has an excellent project management process that utilizes regular communication cycles, including daily check-in. Our project was time sensitive and very complex. We requested a daily check-in for long periods to identify and mitigate any potential problems. This helped ensure an almost problem-free project (MediaNet engaged NorthSouth for 15 months over a dozen projects.
NorthSouth developed the infrastructure for a music royalty platform and rights holder database included a content management user interface application. This is a high scale platform the had multiple product requirements ranging from database development, content management systems (CMS) and reporting tools.
